What is GST Audit?
A GST audit is an examination of a business's GST returns to ensure that they comply with GST regulations. It helps or assists businesses in identifying errors and discrepancies in their returns, rectify them, and avoid potential penalties. The audit also enhances transparency and accuracy in financial reporting and provides valuable insights into the business's financial performance and operations. GST audit is essential for businesses to ensure compliance, improve financial reporting, and drive business performance.
Every registered person under GST, excluding Input Service Distributors, taxpayers who are paying tax under Sections 51 or 52, casual taxpayers, and non-resident taxpayers, is obliged to electronically submit an annual return each year that compares the value of supplies reported on the return to the audited annual financial statement for each fiscal year, WITHIN SUCH TIME (ON OR BEFORE 31ST DECEMBER) AS PER RULE 80(1), and in such form and in such manner as may be prescribed. The annual return may include a SELF-CERTIFIED RECONCILIATION STATEMENT if the aggregate turnover exceeds 5 Crore as per rule 80(3).

FAQs
Whether GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 are mandatory to file before filing the GSTR-9?
Yes, it is mandatory to file both Form GSTR-1 and Form GSTR-3B for the financial year for which the GSTR-9 return is being filed before filing the GSTR-9 return. This means that before filing the annual return in GSTR-9 form, you need to ensure that you have already filed all GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns for that particular financial year.
Whether HSN summary is mandatory?
Yes, an HSN-wise summary for outward supply is mandatory from FY 2021-22. For dealers having an aggregate turnover exceeding Rs. 5 crores, an HSN summary of up to 6 digits is mandatory for all outward supplies, and for dealers having an aggregate turnover up to Rs. 5 crores, an HSN summary up to 4 digits for B2B is mandatory. However, the HSN summary for inward supply is optional. The HSN summary is an important aspect of GST returns and helps in analyzing the supply of a particular commodity or service from a particular supplier.
Can we revise GSTR-9?
No, GSTR-9, once filed, cannot be revised. This is because the GSTR-9 return is an annual return filed by registered taxpayers containing details of all inward and outward supplies during the financial year. Hence, it is important to ensure the accuracy of the data before finalizing and filing the GSTR-9 return, as once filed, it cannot be revised. Any discrepancies found after filing may be rectified through appropriate amendments or adjustments in the subsequent returns.
What are the documents to be enclosed with Form GSTR-9C?
The documents required to be enclosed along with Form GSTR-9C are a copy of the audited financial statements as per Section 35(5) and a copy of the audit report in cases where the entity’s audit is conducted by a different party in accordance with a law other than the GST Act. These documents provide a comprehensive view of the financial and accounting aspects of the registered taxpayer. Form GSTR-9C is an important document under GST law and must be filed by taxpayers with an aggregate turnover above a specified limit.
Can GSTR-9C be filed without filing Annual GST Return (GSTR-9)?
No, GSTR-9C cannot be filed without filing the Annual GST Return (GSTR-9) first. As per GST laws, GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement that is intended to be filed along with GSTR-9 by taxpayers whose aggregate turnover exceeds a certain limit. Hence, it is mandatory to file GSTR-9 before filing GSTR-9C since the reconciliation statement is based on the details furnished in the annual return.
